1. Montaigne is an absolute inspiration.

2. When you teach people to write you teach them to think.

3. Writing for virality undermines longevity.

Most essays on substack are about how to write on Substack. We needn't be bogged down by this. We need to be inspired to write more.

Great read. Pleasant, clean, and smooth. Full of ideas that got me thinking. Also, really interesting ideas for the future of AI when it comes to essay writing, no matter how critical I may be of them.

There's one sentence in the essay that really got my attention:

"However, even if we tried to build an education system of the purest Enlightenment ideals, we would’ve faced insurmountable issues of scale."

Like the author, I have plenty to question about the Enlightenment. The one that sticks out is why do we need scale? That's only if a requirement of education is "to build a workforce to meet the needs of industrialization." We already went down that road and it's failed us. Let's find a different reason for education, one that helps us build a world were technology's purpose isn't scale, it's happiness. I wrote about this recently. Maybe you're interested:
